General Description of Position:

Ivy Tech Community College is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, service-oriented instruction and information technology librarian to promote and advance information literacy throughout the Ivy Tech Indianapolis service area. This librarian will partner with faculty to design, coordinate, and deliver library instruction and pedagogical materials that promote information literacy across the curriculum, and will serve as a library liaison to assigned departments. This individual will be responsible for leading and facilitating support for our students’ information technology needs. A strong candidate for this position will be committed to fostering student success, and will provide a variety of professional library services face-to-face and virtually, including reference and technology assistance, to students and other library patrons.  

Major Responsibilities:

Information and Technology Literacy Instruction

  • Partner with faculty to plan and design engaging, course-integrated instruction of best practices for research and information literacy. 
  • Schedule and provide information literacy and technology instruction within the library and for face-to-face and virtual classrooms. Develop learning outcomes, as well as supplemental written and digital materials to support student learning during these sessions. 
  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and assess a broad range of teaching and learning tools to meet curricular needs, including but not limited to web-based tutorials, instructional videos, and subject-specific research guides using LibGuides. 
  • Stay current on information technology and literacy trends and best practices.  

Student-Centered Service

  • Facilitate one-on-one reference assistance in-person, on the phone, and via chat and email. 
  • Assist all students with technology needs, including computer and internet literacy basics and troubleshooting questions related to students’ learning management system, joining Zoom sessions, using Microsoft or Google applications, printing, etc. 
  • Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving and desire to identify and support student success.
  • Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported.
  • Go beyond the easiest or surface answer for a student, or an internal or external customer, and get to the root cause of the problem, question or issue to solve it as quickly and professionally as possible.

Advocacy and Outreach

  • Promote library services to the college community by participating in student-facing events such as New Student Orientation and involvement fairs, as well as academic departmental meetings. 
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with campus stakeholders including students, faculty, and staff to better understand their needs and to develop library instruction and/or resources to meet course goals. 
  • Assist team in planning relevant programming within the Library.  


  • Assist in developing and maintaining print and digital collections that meet the curricular needs of students and faculty. Coordinate with the Library’s Tech Services staff in the collection development’s selecting and weeding processes. 
  • Assist with training and mentoring staff as related to information literacy and technology instruction. 
  • Assist with data collection for information literacy instruction and library usage.
  • Assists in exploring and assessing emerging technologies critical to the delivery of reference and informational services.  
  • Participate in local campus and statewide library and college committees and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited institution. 
  • Two years library public service experience required. 
  • Experience providing information literacy instruction and reference assistance, preferably in a college library context. Excellent teaching skills. 
  • Working knowledge of professional library best practices, automated library systems, and current information technology trends.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse audiences–in one-on-one, small group, and classroom settings. Ability to maintain tactful, pleasant, and non-judgmental interactions with patrons.
  • Proficiency with computer and web applications on various devices including Windows PCs, MacBook's, and Google Chromebooks. Working knowledge of course management systems (e.g. Canvas or Blackboard), Microsoft and Google Suites, email and chat applications, and Zoom. 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience or certificate in Instructional Design.
  • Experience with programmatic and/or course-specific assessment for library instruction.
  • Knowledge of emerging library pedagogies.

Work Environment:

  • While performing duties for this job, the staff member will frequently operate a computer, speak, listen, and move about the library to assist students at various work stations and to visit classrooms around campus for instructional sessions. 
  • A strong candidate for this position will be able to take initiative for independent tasks and work collaboratively with colleagues. This position requires flexibility and problem-solving. 
  • Schedule changes, including some evening or Saturday work, may be required based on department and College needs.
  • Librarian position is located the Downtown Indianapolis Campus.
