General Description of Position:

The Lead Maintenance Technician has the responsibility for maintenance, safety, and sanitation of Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County, facilities, and grounds as assigned. This position will provide leadership to the facilities department and report to the Director of Facilities.

Major Responsibilities:

- Evaluates systems or facilities to determine maintenance or repairs that need to be performed.

- Perform assigned work orders in a timely and safe manner.

- Operate and maintain assigned equipment including HVAC.

- Perform timely cyclical preventative maintenance tasks and maintain reporting documentation.

- Ensures maintenance and repair work is completely safely, effectively, and in a timely manner.

- Assist Director of Facilities with cyclical safety inspections.

- Assist Director of Facilities with managing key/card access system.

- Clean and maintain assigned areas and equipment.

- Respond to building system alarms as well as intrusion alarms.

- Works with the Director of Facilities to plan work priorities, obtain necessary supplies, and assess skills needed to complete tasks.

- Assesses building systems to plan work assignments.

- Coordination: Collaborates with team members guiding them on the following upcoming work assignments; delegates assignments based on team members skills and experience. Guide fellow technicians and makes recommendations for development of maintenance and facilities staff.

- Guide fellow Maintenance Technicians with technical issues or advanced problems with given assignments.


- Inspects work performed by fellow Maintenance Technicians and reports to the Director of Facilities with updates and recommendations.


- Works with Director of Facilities to coordinate topics for safety meetings.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Perform seasonal tasks outside as assigned or directed.

- Load/unload and deliver equipment and supplies.

- Move furniture and equipment as directed.

- Assist and guide students/faculty/staff with directional/security/safety information.

- Perform purchasing activities for Facilities department and maintain adequate inventory of approved products.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

- High School graduate or equivalent. In addition to, two years of specialized Post-Secondary Education/training or technical industry certification in the Maintenance/Facilities field.


- Three years related work experience.


- Operate and perform repair or maintenance on buildings and equipment.


- Read and follow manufacturer and other published instructions.


- Extensive knowledge of building systems such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.


- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.


- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.


- Ability to identify issues and to determine repairs that are needed.


- Strong leadership skills and the ability to assist in guiding team members through various tasks/responsibilities.


- Follow instructions and work independently.


- Computer skills including experience with MS Office applications.


- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software as needed to complete reports, logs, and inventory.


- Valid driver’s license and meet insurability requirements under Ivy Tech Community College’s driver insurance program.


- Ability to Lift 70 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
